U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 9 Hazardous Substances Technical Liaison and UA SBRP Research Translation Coordinator Launch Seminar Series

The "EPA-UA SBRP Seminar Series" is the result of ongoing collaborative and communicative efforts between U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 9 Hazardous Substances Technical Liaison (HSTL), Mike Gill and UA SBRP Research Translation Coordinator, Monica Ramirez. After discussing and delineating the scientific needs of the Regional Project Managers (RPMs) and the research strengths of the UA SBRP, Mike Gill and Monica Ramirez designed a first-of-its-kind seminar series, consisting of two parts:

1) “Live” at Region 9
UA SBRP investigators travel to San Francisco and present an in-person/"live" seminar for RPMs. This face-to-face interaction initiates a dialogue and two-way communication conduit that will hopefully lead to the exchange of ideas, ongoing research needs, and collaborative work at Superfund sites.

2) Web Seminar
Utilizing the comments and feedback from the Region 9 RPMs, the UA SBRP Investigator modifies the original presentation and conducts an international web seminar via Clu-In, sponsored by NIEHS. In addition, the web seminar has a live and local audience Arizona Department of Environmental Quality personnel as well as other stakeholders.

The UA SBRP kicked off the “EPA-UA SBRP Seminar Series” with a presentation entitled, “Catalytic Destruction of PCE and TCE in Soil Vapor — Laboratory and Field Studies”. UA SBRP Investigator, Dr. Eric Betterton, presented at the U.S. EPA Region 9 headquarters on January 24, 2007. Dr. Eduardo Sáez led the web seminar on February 28, 2007.

With the UA SBRP Research Translation Core working directly with the HSTL, the "EPA-UA SBRP Seminar Series" hopes to hit various targets at the local, state, national and international level. This information transfer activity fosters continuity and nurtures relationships; which is essential in partnership building.
